Residential Care

The Foundation Stone of a 34 unit Aged Hostel was laid by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Colin Hannah on August 10, 1973 and the hostel, named The Laura Johnson Home was opened in November, 1975 by MIM Chairman, Sir James Foots.

This hostel is today known as our Low Care Wing and consists of 34 self-contained motel style residential units plus supervisor's accommodation and a kitchen, dining, and lounge room complex, set amid extensive gardens.

In 1978, the Society was able, through local donations and Government subsidy, to build a 10 bed nursing home.

Mr. Alex Pavusa, the President of the Mount Isa Trades and Labour Council, opened the nusing home in July 1979. This original 10 bed nursing home has since grown to become a well equipped 40 bed High Care Wing that forms, together with the original Hostel, the Laura Johnson Home as it stands today.
